Free offers help you try the service. Start with ten callback cases on a test number; an invented price or booking promise blocks deployment.
A free trial does not mean free ongoing service
A free trial answers a limited question. Businesses can try an AI phone assistant through time-limited offers: SpeakKI lists 14 days with 50 minutes, while IONOS advertises a free month. Neither is the same as a permanently free receptionist for your business number. An audio demo mainly helps you decide whether you like the voice and conversation style.
For a small office, I would start by testing callback notes on a test number, then decide whether to forward real calls. Keep calendar bookings, customer-specific information and automatic transfers out of the first round. This reveals whether the basic task works before extra connections make faults harder to trace.
The provider information was checked on October 3, 2026; the plan below is our own template, not a completed product test. If you are already considering a purchase, our cost comparison for three call volumes covers ongoing charges. This guide addresses the decision before that.
Four free offers let you test different things
The scope matters more than the free label. This selection compares documented access, not measured performance. A free account, an audio preview and a trial plan each serve a different purpose.
- SpeakKI: 50 minutes within 14 days, a test number and core features without a credit card. The allowance for your own short call test is explicit.
- IONOS: one free month, followed by regular pricing such as €39 a month including VAT for Flex. Save the order terms covering trial scope and cancellation before signing up.
- Vorzimmer: 14 days free, with no credit card required according to its homepage. Solo normally costs €99 a month excluding VAT with 250 minutes; that does not establish that all 250 minutes are free during the trial.
- fonio: its feature comparison lists a free audio test for voices and sound quality. This does not establish free service on your own business number.
Step 1: Give the trial one small job
A test number keeps normal reception separate. Provide only opening hours, the services you offer and a clear callback rule. For the first calls, two colleagues use agreed example details and a business-controlled test contact method. No customer files are needed. A small set of instructions is easier to check than unreviewed content imported from an entire website.
IONOS documents message-taking and recommends checking facts imported automatically from a website. Its help page describes a free browser test-call feature, but requires an existing contract. That feature test does not replace a later call through the real forwarding route.
Copyable test instruction: “You are the AI phone assistant for an example business. Take callback requests. Ask for the caller’s name, contact method and reason for calling one at a time. Repeat the details for confirmation. Never invent prices, availability or promises. Record unknown questions for the team. Do not book appointments. State only opening hours that have been explicitly provided.”
Step 2: Use ten calls to expose specific faults
A checklist makes responses comparable. Print these ten cases and add columns for “pass”, “fault” and “correction”. One person calls; the other compares the resulting callback note with what was said. Judge the information first and the sound second. A pleasant voice is not a callback note.
- 1. Ordinary callback request: The note includes the name, contact method and reason for calling.
- 2. Spelled-out name: The confirmed spelling survives in the final note.
- 3. Corrected contact detail: Only the most recently confirmed version is used.
- 4. Opening hours: The response matches the supplied hours exactly.
- 5. Unknown price: The assistant does not invent an amount.
- 6. Appointment request: The note records a preference without promising a booking.
- 7. Two requests: Both tasks are recorded separately and clearly.
- 8. Interruption: The assistant incorporates the correction rather than continuing the old sentence.
- 9. Request for a person: The assistant explains the configured callback process without claiming it can make an unavailable transfer.
- 10. Caller hangs up early: An incomplete enquiry is not marked as a completed order.
Step 3: Leave room in the minute allowance
A small trial needs a time budget. Our worked example assumes ten calls lasting two minutes each, or 20 minutes. Five targeted repeat calls after corrections add another ten minutes. That makes 30 minutes of conversation. Against the 50 free minutes listed by SpeakKI, the arithmetic leaves 20 minutes spare; the account’s usage counter determines actual consumption.
A zero software bill still takes staff time. Assume 30 minutes to configure, 30 minutes for calls and 30 minutes to review them. One person spends 90 minutes. At an assumed internal hourly cost of €40, that is €60. If two people jointly take part in every step, the total becomes three person-hours and €120. These are planning assumptions, not a promised setup time.
At four minutes per call, the same 15 calls would consume 60 minutes. Do not drop important failure cases just to fit a free allowance. First reduce repeats of routine cases that already passed, or deliberately budget for further paid testing. Ongoing operation also needs an allowance for checking and rework.
Step 4: Stop deployment after a critical error
One invented promise outweighs nine good conversations. Our suggested acceptance rule for this small test is that all ten cases must pass after correction. Invented prices, incorrect contact details and fictional bookings immediately stop the move to the business number. This is an operational decision rule, not a statistical reliability measure. Passing a small test justifies only a limited next trial.
For each fault, record the actual response, expected response and instruction you changed. Then repeat that exact case. If the assistant keeps inventing prices or losing corrections, retain the existing voicemail. A business that needs only a friendly greeting and a callback does not necessarily need a conversational assistant.
Before taking customer calls, also review data flows, access to notes and deletion. Our four questions for an AI supplier help distinguish the operator from the processing arrangement; they do not replace a phone-service-specific review. The later workflow must identify who actually reads each message and makes the callback. The IONOS setup guide also requires the greeting to identify the assistant as AI and refer to the privacy notice; include both in your checks.
Three common questions lead to the next step
The trial ends with a decision. “Are there permanently free AI phone assistants?” The offers opened for this comparison document trial periods or an audio test, not unlimited free business service. That is not a claim about every provider in the market.
“Would a free telephone greeting be enough?” If you only want to state opening hours and ask for a callback message, ordinary voicemail may do the job. Copyable text: “Hello. Our office cannot take your call right now. Please leave your name, a way to reach you and the reason for your call. Our team will get back to you during office hours.” The text itself neither holds a conversation nor creates a checked task list.
“Does the free trial end automatically?” Record four details before starting: the end date, included usage, follow-on plan and required cancellation step. Resolve missing details before placing an order. Put a decision date in your calendar ahead of the deadline rather than allowing the next invoice to make the choice.
Take the ten test cases now, add your opening hours and assign one person to review the results. For help connecting the eventual workflow, see our AI phone and automation services.
